THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
FACILITATOR: MISS LIEL GEM M. VILLAVER
Subject Matter: General Science
Major Topic: Body Systems
Minor Topic: The Digestive System
I. Lesson Objectives:
Given a picture of the digestive organs, the learner will be able to satisfactorily label the organs of the digestive system.
Given words with their meanings, each child will be able to sequence the six processes made by the digestive system.
In a matching type assessment system, each student will be able to thoroughly describe each organ of the digestive system.
The student will be able to distinguish at least seven disorders of the digestive system by using a concept organizer.
II. Key Concepts:
The digestive system eight major parts namely the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, pancreas and anus.
It also undergoes six basic processes. First, ingestion occurs by taking food into the mouth. Second is secretion, the release of water, acid, buffers and enzymes into the of the GI tract. The third is mixing and propulsion, the churning and propulsion of food through the GI tract. Fourth is digestion, the mechanical and chemical breakdown of food. Fifth is absorption, the passage of digested products from the GI tract into the blood and lymph. Lastly, defecation occurs through the elimination of feces from the GI tract.
There are several organs of the digestive system. Each part has different decription.
There are many disorders of the digestive system. Some of these are dental caries, periodontal disease, peptic ulcer, diverticular disease, colorectal cancer, hepatitis, anorexia nervosa, etc.
III. Learning Activities
Activity 1
“Name It”
Look for a picture of the digestive system and label its parts using the parts indicated below.
ANUS PANCREAS LARGE INTESTINE
MOUTH STOMACH SMALL INTESTINE
ESOPHAGUS PHARYNX

Activity 2
“GIVE ME MY ORDER”
Below are the six basic processes of the digestive system with their description. They are not in order. Sequence it and place it in a cycle concept organizer.
· MIXING AND PROPULSION (churning and propulsion of food through the GI tract)
· INGESTION (taking food into the mouth)
· ABSORPTION (passage of digested products from the GI tract into the blood and lymph)
· DEFECATION (the elimination of feces from the GI tract)
· SECRETION (release of water, acid, buffers and enzymes into the lunen of the GI tract)
· DIGESTION (mechanical and chemical breakdown of food)

Activity 3
“MATCH US”
Written in column A is the brief description of each organ of the digestive system written in column B. Try to match them by placing the number of choice before each number.
Column A Column B
(a) collapsed, muscular tube involved (1) mouth
in deglutition and peristalsis (2) teeth
(b) coiled tube attached to the cecum (3) salivary glands
(c) contains duodenal glands in the (4) pharynx
submucosa (5) esophagus
(d) produces and secretes bile (6) tongue
(e) contains aggregated lymphatic follicles (7) stomach
in the submucosa (8) duodenum
(f) responsible for ingestion, mastication, (9) ileum
and deglutition (10) colon
(g) responsible for churning, peristalsis, storage (11) liver
and chemical digestion with the enzyme pepsin (12) gallbladder
(h) storage area for bile (13) appendix
(i) contain acini that release juices containing (14) pancreas
several digestive enzymes for protein,
carbohydrate, lipid, and nucleic acid digestion
and sodium bicarbonate to buffer stomach acid
(j) composed of enamel, dentin, and pulp cavity;
used in mastication
(k) passageway for food, fluid and air; involved
in deglutition
(l) forms a semisolid waste material through
haustral churning and peristalsis
(m) forces the food to the back of the mouth for
swallowing; places food in contact with the teeth
(n) produce a fluid in the mouth that helps cleanse
the mouth and teeth and that lubricates, dissolves,
and begins the chemical breakdown of food
Activity 4
“MY DISORDERS”
Using some references, search for the common diseases of the digestive system.
Try to analyze how to prevent such diseases.
IV. Course Policies
Attendance. Once you are online, kindly write “(your name) is here, ma’am”. Example: Liel Gem Villaver is here, ma’am
Requirements. Requirements should be passed on time. Do not pass the requirement as if all in one. Pass the requirement by activity. You will post a different string for requirement 1, another for requirement 2, so on and so forth. For requirements alone, I am expecting that you will have a minimum of 4 postings.
Teacher’s Presence. For every post you will make, I will be giving comments.
Comments. You are free to comment the work of others as well as to the comment that I have given.
V. Course Requirements
Requirement 1
Labelled organs of the digestive system as presented in Activity 1 above.
Requirement 2
A concept map on the sequenced processes of the digestive system with its description.
Requirement 3
Answer to activity 1. Answers should be written in this way. (See example below)
· Gallbladder- storage area for bile
Requirement 4
A concept organizer of the disorders of the digestive system. You need to place at least seven disorder.
