Lesson 2 Nervous System: The Brain
Facilitator: Judith Carope

Subject Matter:                 General Science

            Major Topic:               Nervous System

            Minor Topic:              The Brain

I.        Lesson Objectives:

1.            The student will be able to explain eighty five percent of the brain structure by posting a brain picture.

2.             Given a picture of the brain, each student will be able to identify the three regions and each part.

3.            The student will be able to submit eighty percent of the brain parts and each function in table forms by independent learning.

4.        The student will be able to enumerate 10 common facts of brain by using the descriptive pattern organizer.

II.      Key Concepts:

The brain regulates many body processes by controlling the functioning of organs and systems. It communicates with the rest of the body through the spinal cord and a wiring system formed by the nerves.

The brain has parts, divided into three main regions, each with different functions. These regions are the forebrain, the cerebellum, and brain stem.

The forebrain has four parts: the cerebrum – responsible for conscious thoughts and actions, the thalamus – is an information relay station, the hypothalamus -  controls  many automatic body process such s body temperature and hunger, and the limbic system – controls our feelings and emotions. The cerebellum controls the body’s balance and coordination, while the brain stem forms a link between brain and spinal cord. It monitors and regulates the body’s vital functions. These include how fast the heart beats, how quickly we breathe, and how high our blood pressure is.

III.    Learning Activities

Activity 1

“Explain brain structure”

Look for the brain picture and analyzed the formation or organization of the brain. Write a short paragraph based on composition that you’ve discovered.

Activity 2

“Identify”

Below are the scrambled parts of brain. Try to group these words according to their family.

Look for a picture of the brain and label it using the parts written below.

Limbic system

Forebrain

Cerebrum

Cerebellum

Thalamus

Brain stem

Hypothalamus

Activity 3

“Analyzed”

The brain has parts and each function.

Below are the functions of the parts mentioned on activity 2. Try to analyze and put the exact part of each function. Write in a table form.

·         is an information relay station

·         controls the body’s balance and coordination

·         responsible for conscious thoughts and actions

·         controls our feelings and emotions

·         monitors how fast the heart beats, how quickly we breathe, and how high our blood pressure is

·         forms a link between brain and spinal cord

·         controls many automatic body process such s body temperature and hunger

·         monitors and regulates the body’s vital functions

Activity 4

“Describe and List facts”

Using some references, search and read about brain.

Describe brain or list facts that you have read by using the descriptive pattern organizer.

IV.   Course Policies

Attendance. Once you are online, kindly write “(your name) is here, ma’am”. Example: Judith Carope is here, ma’am

Requirements. Requirements should be passed on time. Do not pass the requirement as if all in one. Pass the requirement by activity. You will post a different string for requirement 1, another for requirement 2, so on and so forth. For requirements alone, I am expecting that you will have a minimum of 4 postings.

Teacher’s Presence. For every post you will make, I will be giving comments.

Comments. You are free to comment the work of others as well as to the comment that I have given.

V.     Course Requirements

Requirement 1

“Explain brain structure in a short paragraph”

Requirement 2

“Identify the parts of the brain”

Picture of the brain with its labeled parts.

Requirement 3

“Make a table”

Analyzed the functions of each part

Requirement 4

“Make a Descriptive organizer of brain”

                              Facts about brain

Note: In making the requirement, kindly refer to your activities.

Good day ma'am! this is sweet.
This is what I've researched for activity #1.

Our brain is very essential to every living creature-most especially to us,human beings. Usually, the day we we're born until 9 years old in our life,we are unconscious to this brain-thing theory. (of course, unless your parents will talk about it with you as early as possible) But the good thing on this matter is that, even though you don't know anything about your brain, still it's functioning and works pretty cool for  you, right?
Brain,-as I how was I oriented with this is that,it is not really hard to understand. Brain is responsible on my different perception such as self-control, planning, reasoning, and abstract thought.but, yet, it is complex in nature. Each parts has a special task to do and very sensitive in responding things. Amazing, isn't it?

ACTIVITY 1 REQUIREMENT

The photos below are photos of the brain.
View Image
View Image
These are the photos I have downloaded referring to the human brain.
The human brain is composed of brain cells called neurons.
Human Brain neuron
The brain is the center of the nervous system. It is the one that makes thinking possible. Without this, one cannot think nor respond towards the senses. As what we could see in the structure of the neuron, the brain is composed of tiny neurons which is the one responsible for receiving nerve impulses. By that, messages go to the spinal cord and is sent to the brain. The brain is responsible for interpretng those messages. The different parts of the brain have different functions. Each activity is being interpreted by the responsible parts of the brain. The brain then sents the interpreted message to the responsible sense organ.
Through the brain structure, it tells us that the brain interprets in an organized way.

Thank you for the compliment sweet.
I just downloaded those since I cannot see a photo with the complete six parts of the brain (as it was stated that we need to find one). Well, better to see an unclear one, but with complete parts, than to pass a very clear one but somewhat lacking. Anyways, I think I don't need to download a clearer one since I can't find any.
However, if you could not still understand such part, you can search it for yourself and share it with the group.
By the way, are you done with our Lesson 1 Cardiovascular System: The Heart? I just hope so since it was posted ahead than this lesson.

 Thank you sweet,

Yes you got points; however, can you explain more about the structure of our brain?  How the brain parts organize?

Jannine Eliseo is here ma'am

The different parts of the brain have its different function. It is very important that we human have to do our part as the operator because our system depends on how we handle it with care.  Our brain is not only in physical concern but also in the emotional, academic aspect. It is also important to know that every part of the brain is very useful; it connects to each other that make the function easier. That is why we should continually thank God for this thing, because it helps us to solve problems, think critically, and do our work in the right way….

3. a. thalamus

 b. cerebellum

c. cerebrum

d. Limbic system

e.Brain stem

f. brain stem

g. hypothalamus

h.fore brain
